Near-Infrared: What It Is and Why It Affects You

Invisible light with real impact on your privacy and daily comfort.
  • Near-infrared (NIR) light is invisible to the eye, emitted by the sun, and used by facial recognition systems to scan and map your face.
  • Biometric data is personal. Facial scans can be stored, analyzed, and misused, raising concerns about digital privacy.
  • Zenni ID Guard reflects NIR light, helping to disrupt unwanted tracking and put more control back in your hands.
  • Facial Recognition - note that FaceID or Windows Hello may not work while wearing these lenses—proof your infrared protection is active.
  • NIR isn’t just a privacy issue—prolonged sunlight exposure may also impact eye comfort and clarity.

Zenni ID Guard™ FAQ

Zenni ID Guard™ uses a specialized coating that reflects a significant portion of near-infrared light—the same wavelength commonly used by various tracking systems. By reflecting this light away from your eyes, the coating may help disrupt certain infrared detection methods that rely on this type of light.

Zenni ID Guard™ can now be added to a wide range of our lens types, including:
  • Clear Lenses
  • Blokz
  • EyeQLenz

Zenni ID Guard™ will be available in the future on:

  • Blokz® Plus Anti-Fatigue
  • Standard photochromic lenses
  • Classic sunglasses
  • Polarized lenses
  • Blokz® sunglasses

Zenni ID Guard™ is not compatible with the following lens types:

  • Blokz® Plus Tinted
  • Blokz® Photochromic
  • FL-41
  • Night Driving
  • Transitions®

The subtle iridescent pink sheen on your lenses comes from our special anti-infrared coating, which is a sign that the lenses are actively reflecting infrared light to help disrupt unwanted tracking. This is the visible effect of Zenni ID Guard™ at work and does not affect your vision or noticeably change the appearance of your glasses when worn.

Infrared light is all around us, from natural sunlight to artificial sources like digital screens and LED lighting. While invisible to the naked eye, infrared rays or prolonged exposure to infrared light may potentially affect eye health over time.

Zenni ID Guard™'s coating reflects approximately 75% of near-infrared light (700-1050 nm), which can help disrupt unwanted tracking systems and potentially reduce strain from long-term infrared exposure.

The anti-infrared coating's pink sheen can interact with your chosen tint color, creating subtle variations in appearance depending on lighting conditions and your environment. While these factors may subtly shift how the tint color appears, rest assured your lens performance and protection will remain consistent.

Zenni ID Guard™ may interfere with Face ID, Windows Hello, and similar features that use infrared light for facial recognition. You may need to remove your glasses temporarily to use these features. This interference is actually a good sign, as it means the coating is successfully reflecting the infrared light these systems rely on.
