The first step towards obtaining the perfect pair of glasses online is to have a comprehensive eye exam. Typically, glasses prescriptions are valid for two years (one year for contact lens) and ensuring your prescription is up-to-date is crucial for accurate vision correction. In general, it is recommended to get a comprehensive eye exam every 1-2 years to check the full health of your eye even if you don’t feel any vision changes. This is because eye exams can detect early signs of eye conditions including glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration and to detect underlying health issues like diabetes and hypertension.

Browse Frames and Filter Choices
With your prescription in hand, it’s time to explore the diverse range of frames Zenni offers. Zenni offers dozens of filters including face shape, frame shape, frame color, and age to help you find your perfect fit. Dr. Allen offers a few helpful tips for choosing the right frame for you. You can also take advantage of Zenni’s Virtual Try-On feature.
- Tip 1: Consider a frame that is contrasted to your face shape. Dr. Allen says, “If you have more of a rounder face, then a more boxy shaped frame is going to fit and complement a little bit better.”
- Tip 2: To Nose Pads or Not To Nose Pads? Dr. Allen adds, “If you’re somebody whose glasses frames usually end up sliding down your nose…[look for] a pair of glasses that have nose pads on them. Those might work a little better because nose pads, we can adjust a lot easier and they’re less likely to slide down your face.” From someone who has adjusted a lot of glasses in her career, nose pads are often one of the first things I adjust to help patients get the perfect fit.
- Tip 3: Consider matching the numbers on the inside of your current glasses to the frame measurements listed towards the bottom of the listing. These numbers include eye size, distance between lenses, and temple size.

Customize the Details
With your perfect frames chosen, it’s time to input your glasses prescription and choose your lenses! Dr. Allen provides great live examples of what each of the lenses look like from Clear, to Blokz, to Transitions.
Almost there! The next step is to choose the appropriate refractive index, which influences lens thickness. The higher the number, the thinner and lighter the lens. Dr. Allen says, “I personally think that having a higher index lens is good for any prescription, but is definitely a must if you have a high nearsightedness prescription like myself, or anybody who has a higher prescription of -3.00 or worse.” To ensure a slimmer and more aesthetically pleasing profile, opt for a lens index of 1.67 or 1.74 if you’re above a -3.00.
Finally, consider adding an anti-reflective coating to minimize glare and reflections, providing sharper vision and reducing eye strain. He says, “This is something I honestly do strongly recommend everyone consider investing in…to help reduce the glare and reduce any reflections coming off the lens surface itself.” As for specific anti-reflective lenses, he recommends getting the oil-resistant type.
