What is Pupillary Distance?
Pupillary distance (PD) measures the distance between the centers of your pupils and determines the optical center of your lenses. This measurement should be as accurate as possible, as it will ensure you see through your lenses clearly.
If you have purchased glasses from your eye doctor in the past, you can request this measurement from them directly. You can also measure your PD yourself.

How to Use Zenni's Custom Dual PD Ruler
What is Dual PD?
DUAL PD (monocular) consists of two numbers, measuring the distances between the centers of each pupil to the bridge of the nose. Since faces are not always symmetrical, a dual PD provides a custom measurement for each eye, which will ensure better lens accuracy. Using a dual PD ruler is one of the easiest ways to find both measurements.
While a single PD is written as one number (ex. 62 mm), a dual PD is written as two numbers like this: 32/30 mm.
How to Measure Your PD with a Dual PD Ruler
- Stand 8 inches away from a mirror.
- Place the inverted V cutout on the base of the dual PD ruler against your nose bridge. Your eyes should now be looking through the cutouts in the ruler.
- Look straight ahead and close your left eye, keeping your right eye open. Note the line of measurement value that corresponds with the center of your pupil.
- Open your left eye, close your right eye, and note the line of measurement value for the left eye pupil.
- These two numbers are your dual PD measurements.
TIPS WHEN A FRIEND IS MEASURING
You
- Look beyond your friend and fix your gaze on something 10-20 feet away.
- Keep as still as possible.
Your friend
- Stand slightly to the side to allow the person being measured the ability to look over your shoulder into the distance.
- Looking at the person’s eyes through the cutouts, note the line of measurement value that corresponds with each pupil.
